History of Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura, the very first capital (3rd BC -10th AD) of ancient Sri Lanka, established in 380 BC by a minister of King Pandukhabaya by the name of Anuradha, on the banks of River Malwatu Oya, was once the greatest monastic city of the world. In spite of the recurrent invasions by the marauding Dravidians from Southern India, the capital city lasted for nearly a millennium and a half, till the establishment of the city of Polonnaruwa.

****After breakfast visit Ancient City of Anuradhapura and it is the main ancient kingdoms in Sri Lanka. "One of UNISCO World Heritage Site in Sri Lanka"
Anuradhapura Ancient Kingdom.

Anuradhapura has been classed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Anuradhapura or 'the city of Anura', is the earliest capital of Sri Lanka and was home to the royal court from 437 BC to 1017 AD. However it is not only a city, but one of the great centres of Buddhism in South Asia visited by thousands of pilgrims and tourists each year. The site consists of a central ten metre high mound covered in jungle, marking the old urban core, surrounded by over thirty square kilometres of Buddhist monasteries and huge reservoirs. Amongst the most spectacular of the Buddhist monuments are four great stupas, solid domes of earth and brick built over a Buddhist relic, which reach heights of over eighty metres and dominate the landscape of paddy fields and coconut trees.

**Then Proceed to Habarana and Meet Eco Odyssey Safari Team for a Minneriya Jeep Safari.
Minneriya.

The Minneriya national park is situated in between Polonnaruwa and Habarana. The park covers an area of 8890 hectares and is a transit lounge of sorts for the elephants travelling from Kaudulla to the Wasgomuwa national park. At the Minneriya national park one could site 200-300 Asian elephants during the peak season which takes place during the dry season; June to September.

'The Gathering' refers to the annual meeting of large numbers of elephants at the Minneriya tank that is located at the centre of the park. Here the elephants drink, bathe and search for a prospective mate. In addition to the elephant one could also spot sloth bears, spotted deer, sambar, leopards, macaque monkeys and the endangered red lipped lizard. The park has a range of habitat types varying from grasslands, dry tropical forests, terrain and wetlands. After the Breakfast We Start climbing Sigiriya Rock Fortress and then proceed to Polonnaruwa (Day 03)
DAY 03 Overnight Stay at Habarana Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Polonnaruwa Kingdom
**After breakfast proceed to Sigiriya Rock Fortres 5th century A.D.

Sigiriya (166 km from Colombo), the stupendous 5th century A.D. rock-fortress citadel of a fugitive king, where history merges with melodrama. A gallery of frescoes of shapely be-jewelled maidens still glows with vibrant colour and the water. It is believed these paintings depict the apsaras?? or goddess and some say it represents the lightning and clouds. Another distinctive feature of Sigiriya is the Mirror Wall which is located just below the paintings. The surface of this wall is well polished and covered with writings known as Sigiri Graffiti?? which are a form of poems. The Lion Staircase leads to the summit and the special feature of this is the massive Lion Paw which carved out of rock. The brick wall is still preserved in original form. Sigiriya is being currently excavated and restored by UNESCO under the Cultural Triangle Project and according to sources is most likely to be declared as a wonder of the world.

**After Lunch Proceed to the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa and you will have the option for a bicycle ride through the traditional villages of Polonnaruwa while visiting historical places. Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka's splendid medieval capital was established as the first city of the land in the 11th Century, A.D. It replaced Anuradhapura, plundered made desolate, and laid hopelessly bare to the invading armies from South India. Three Kings dominate the annals of the city and the period.

After the Breakfast Visit Dambulla Golden Temple and then On the way to Kandy Visit Well Grown Spice Gardens in Matale (Day 04)

****Then proceed to Matale and walk around the well grown spice gardens. Matale

Visit a spice garden in Matale to see many different types of spices Sri Lanka is famous for. Just 25 km from the hill capital of Kandy, the Matale spice gardens are among the best on the island. You will be introduced to different spices and shown how some of these spices are grown and processed.

**Then proceed to Kandy and check in to the hotel. Evening visit Temple of Tooth Relic and Watch Kandyan Dance Show. Kandy

Sri Lanka's picturesque highland capital, last stronghold of Sri Lankan kings against European conquest from the 16 th to the 19 th centuries. It is the sanctuary of traditional culture, and the island's most Visited tourist resort.

Kandy's main attraction is the Dalada Maligawa, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha brought to Sri Lanka in the 4 th century AD. This sacred relic has ever since been the symbol of sovereignty for its rulers and is always enshrined in great splendor. If you are visiting Kandy during July-August the Esala Perahera is definitely a must see. Termed as Asia's grandest pageant, this spectacular annual event is held to honour the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha and to obtain blessings of the guardian deities of Sri Lanka.
After breakfast Visit Royal Botanical Gardens and then proceed to Visit Temples in kandy. (Day 05)
DAY 05 Overnight Stay at Kandy Gadaladeniya, Embekke, Lankathilaka
**After breakfast do a city tour in Kandy with Royal Botanical Gardens.

Six kilometers from Kandy, at Peradeniya, the magnificent 57 hectare Royal Botanical Gardens, laid out in 1832, are among the finest in the world. Its treasures of tropical flora include fine collections of orchids, aromatic spices, medicinal herbs, palms and rare, endangered plant species. Kandy Temples in Sri Lanka.

Kandy is studded with temples. The Sacred Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) at the heart of the city is the holiest temple in the world of Theravada Buddhism. The city of Kandy and countryside of Kandy boast of numerous temples and shrines that belong to Kandyan era of Sri Lanka.

Among the most interesting temple are Gadaladeniya, Embekke Devale and Lankathilaka Viharaya located 10km west of Kandy built during the time Kandyan kingdom was ruled from the city of Gampola.To the east of Kandy within 2km are another three important temples: Gangarama Viharaya, Degaldoruwa Viharaya and Galmaduwa Gedige.
After breakfast in Kandy proceed to Colombo. On the way to Colombo visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. (Day 06)

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage.

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, established in 1975, commenced with seven orphans. Today some of these orphans enjoy the fortune of seeing their grand children born in the same location. The original objective of establishing the orphanage inclined more towards tourism, but is soon became a conservation and educational centre. With the help of local and foreign elephant experts, Pinnawala started a scientific captive-breeding program for elephants.
